Pollution of the atmosphere is one of the most serious problems. The main waste products that pollute the air are gases, such as Sulpher dioxide and Carbon monoxide. Smoke can also cause pallution - it consists of small partices of solid material, such as tar and carbon, suspended in the air. These are bad for health and cause plants and crops to grow less well. The sources of these products are mainly traffic, especially exhaust fumes from cars and lorries, and factories and power stations.

Pollution of seas and rivers is another important problem. Substances which cause pollution of rivers are detergents, poisons waste products of pollution of rivers. One of the most serious cause of pollution of the sea in oil coming from large ships called tankers.

In many of our large towns and cities there is a greatndeal of noise. It comes from air-craft, road traffic and machineries, as well as from radios and record players. All this noise is very unplesant and may actually be harmful to people.
